Frequently Asked Questions

Who is your typical client?

We work with anyone who is interested in discovering the power of financial planning. We especially enjoy and specialize in working with busy families and their complex needs.

Do we have to meet in an office?

Safety is our top priority. We are currently conducting all of our meetings virtually through Zoom. We hope to meet with clients and prospective clients in person soon.

How are you different than other fee-only advisors?

All of our recommendations are based around strengthening your finances today, not just in the future. Together we explore tax and other planning opportunities that add value by improving your cash flow. This distinct and powerful approach gives you the flexibility to do more of the things you want to do sooner.

What does it mean to be fee-only?

One of the most important consideration in hiring a financial planner is how they are compensated. Fee-only planners only receive flat fees from their clients and do not receive any commissions.

We strongly believe this is the best way to work with a planner as it avoids paying for a plan that comes with recommendations that may not be in your best interest.

Why should I hire a planner over doing it myself (DIY)?

The average American spends just under two minutes a day on their personal finances. Most of this time is likely spent on routine items like checking bank account balances or paying bills.

When you hire a fee-only planner you invest in someone that dedicates a substantial amount of time on your financial future. We use this time to discover unique planning opportunities that create value for you and your family.

Why don’t more people work with a fee-only planner?

While there is no shortage of financial advisors out there, there are far less fee-only (no commission) financial planners. This unfortunately leads to an appearance that all advisors are the same, when in reality the experience and services are drastically different.

What is your investment philosophy?

Our philosophy is based on discipline and keeping costs low. We spend a great deal of time with our clients understanding their personal values, objectives, and unique financial situation. This allows us to build highly-customized portfolios that hold the right mix of investments for our clients' goals.

We implement portfolios using primarily index funds, which are low cost and tax efficient. We are steadfast practitioners of disciplined rebalancing, selling stock investments as they go up and buying when they go down. This disciplined approach to investing helps manage risk and adds value over time.

Do you offer pro-bono financial planning?

Yes, we do. If you are currently experiencing financial hardship you are not alone. GuidePoint offers pro-bono (no cost) financial planning to families who have been adversely affected by the coronavirus or who have had their income eliminated or reduced for any reason.
